RETURN TO THE LORD: A LENTEN CALL TO RECONCILIATION

“Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God.” — Joel 2:12–13

Dearly beloved in Christ,

Grace and peace to you in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

As the Church prepares to enter into the holy season of the Great Lent, we use this time to pause, turn inward, and return wholeheartedly to God. Lent is not merely a season of abstinence and discipline but a sacred journey of repentance, healing, and reconciliation with God and with one another. In a world that constantly pushes us forward without reflection, Lent lovingly calls us back to the mercy of God, to the truth of our own hearts, and to the grace that restores broken lives.

Returning to God in Repentance

“Return to Me with all your heart.”

The call of Lent is first and foremost a call to repent. Many of us carry silent burdens; unconfessed sins, wounded relationships, hardened attitudes, and hidden struggles. The Word of God does not invite us to hide these things, but to bring them before the Lord with honesty and humility.

True repentance is not fear-driven sorrow, but a loving response to God’s mercy. It is the turning of our whole being (mind, heart, and will) back toward the One who never turns away from us. When we return to God, we discover that He has been waiting to receive us with compassion and grace.

Reconciliation: The Heart of the Gospel

“God reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:18)

Lent reminds us that reconciliation is at the very heart of the Gospel. Through the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, our broken relationship with God is restored. We who were far away have been brought near, by His sacrificial love. But reconciliation does not end with God alone. The grace we receive must flow outward to our families, our communities, and even to those who have wounded us. Forgiveness, humility, and the courage to seek peace become powerful spiritual acts during this sacred season.

To be reconciled with God is to be transformed into agents of reconciliation in the world.

Fasting that Heals the Heart

Fasting during Lent is not simply the denial of food, but the training of the heart. It teaches us to resist the passions that enslave us—anger, pride, jealousy, selfishness, and bitterness. Through prayer, silence, and self-denial, we allow the Holy Spirit to heal what is broken within us. When the body is disciplined, the soul becomes attentive. When distractions are reduced, God’s voice becomes clearer. Fasting becomes a doorway to deeper repentance and genuine reconciliation.

A Season of Grace and Renewal

Dearly beloved, Lent is God’s gracious invitation to begin again. It is a sacred opportunity to restore what has been damaged, to soften what has grown hard, and to rebuild what has been neglected in our spiritual lives.

Let this season lead us not only to the Cross, but also to renewed relationships, restored hearts, and a deeper communion with our Lord.

May this Lent be a time when Christ heals your wounds, reconciles your heart to God, and renews your love for one another.

May your home be filled with prayer, your heart with repentance, and your life with the peace that flows from reconciliation with God.

In Christ’s Love,
